Description

Craving that nostalgic, flaky bakery apple slice from your childhood? These Chicago Style Bakery Apple Slices are the ultimate dessert bar—flaky puff pastry, cinnamon-sugar apples, and a vanilla glaze. A perfect balance of crisp and gooey, ideal for quick breakfast treats, cozy dessert ideas, or even a sweet brunch centerpiece. This easy recipe is packed with cozy fall flavor and is one of those food ideas you’ll revisit every apple season.

Ingredients

6 cups thinly sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/3 cup light brown sugar

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 pinch salt

2 teaspoons lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 sheets puff pastry, thawed

1 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons milk

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, combine apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, lemon juice, and vanilla. Toss to coat and let sit.

2. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper.

3. Roll one puff pastry sheet into the bottom of the dish, pressing gently up the sides.

4. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the pastry base.

5. Roll out the second puff pastry sheet and place it on top. Seal the edges and cut small slits to vent steam.

6. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until golden and puffed. Cool for 15 minutes.

7. In a bowl, whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla to make glaze. Drizzle over warm pastry. Let set, then slice and serve.

Notes

Use all-butter puff pastry for best flavor and texture—Dufour or Trader Joe’s brands work great.

Let the apple filling rest to release juices before layering into the pastry.

For extra bakery shine, brush the top pastry with a little milk or egg wash before baking.
