This homemade Chocolate Pudding is rich, creamy, and full of real cocoa flavor—perfect for a make-ahead dessert or a cozy treat. It’s simple to prepare, naturally gluten-free, and offers a deeper taste than boxed mixes. Whether served plain or topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings, this pudding delivers pure indulgence in every bite.
Ingredients
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 ounces dark chocolate, chopped
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon butter
Instructions
1. In a medium saucepan (off heat), whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt until no lumps remain.
2. Slowly whisk in the whole milk and heavy cream until fully combined and smooth.
3. Place saucepan over medium heat. Cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble—about 5 to 8 minutes.
4. Remove from heat. Add chopped dark chocolate and butter. Stir until fully melted and the pudding is glossy.
5. Stir in vanilla extract.
6. Optional: Pour pudding through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl for an extra smooth finish.
7. Cover with plastic wrap pressed directly on the surface to prevent skin. Chill at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes
For the best flavor, use high-quality dark chocolate (60-70% cacao).
Straining the pudding removes any lumps and ensures a silky-smooth texture.
To prevent skin from forming, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface before chilling.
