Description
This Homemade Amish Sweet Bread is soft, tender, and gently sweet — a nostalgic loaf that’s perfect for breakfast, dessert, or snacking any time. Whether served warm with butter or used for French toast, it’s a versatile, comforting favorite that’s easy to make from scratch.
Ingredients
1 cup warm milk
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 large egg
1 teaspoon salt
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
1. In a large bowl, mix warm milk with sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
2. Add butter, egg, and salt. Stir in flour one cup at a time until a soft dough forms.
3. Knead dough for 5–6 minutes in a mixer with dough hook or 8–10 minutes by hand on a floured surface.
4. Transfer to a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled.
5. Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
6. Cover loosely and let rise again for 30–45 minutes until just above the pan’s edge.
7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
8. Cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
Notes
For an extra golden crust, brush the top with an egg wash before baking.
If your kitchen is cold, place the dough near a warm oven or use the proof setting for a better rise.
The bread freezes well — slice before freezing for easy reheating.
