Description

Golden, crunchy, and perfectly seasoned, these Homemade Crispy Onion Rings bring classic diner flavor to your kitchen. Sweet onion slices are coated in a light, airy batter and crisped to golden perfection—perfect for snacks, sides, or party platters.

Ingredients

2 large sweet onions

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup cornstarch

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

2 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

2 cups panko breadcrumbs

Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Instructions

1. Peel and slice the onions into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside the large ones.

2. In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder.

3. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and buttermilk.

4. Place panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.

5. Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, then the egg mixture, then coat in panko, pressing to stick.

6. Place the coated rings on a tray and refrigerate for 20 minutes to set the coating.

7. Heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C).

8. Fry onion rings in batches, 2–3 minutes per side, until golden.

9. Drain on a wire rack or paper towels.

10. Serve immediately with dipping sauces of choice.

Notes

Chilling the onion rings before frying helps the coating stay intact.

Don’t overcrowd the pan—fry in small batches for best results.

Panko breadcrumbs make the coating extra crispy—avoid substituting with regular breadcrumbs if possible.
