Description

This Homemade Salisbury Steak features tender beef patties simmered in a rich mushroom-onion gravy. Perfect for a cozy dinner with mashed potatoes or noodles, this comfort food classic is both budget-friendly and packed with flavor.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (85/15 recommended)

1/3 cup breadcrumbs

1 egg

1/2 cup chopped onion (plus more for gravy)

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons butter

1 1/2 cups sliced mushrooms

2 cups beef broth

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 tablespoons water (for slurry)

Fresh thyme or chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, 1/2 cup chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until just combined.

2. Form into 4 to 6 oval patties and set aside.

3. Heat a skillet over medium-high and sear patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.

4. In the same pan, reduce heat to medium and add butter. Sauté sliced mushrooms and remaining chopped onion for 6–8 minutes until soft and golden.

5. Add beef broth and a splash of Worcestershire to the pan. Stir and bring to a simmer.

6. Mix cornstarch and water in a small bowl. Slowly add to the pan, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens.

7. Return the patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. Cover and simmer for 10–12 minutes until fully cooked.

8. Garnish with thyme or parsley and serve hot.

Notes

Don’t overmix your meat mixture—gentle handling keeps patties tender.

Chill patties before cooking to help them hold shape.

Add a splash of red wine to the gravy for extra richness.
