Description

Ingredients

2 pounds potatoes, thinly sliced (Yukon Gold recommended)

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided

4 tablespoons butter

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups milk (whole or 2%)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon fresh parsley or chives, chopped (optional)


Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. Peel and slice potatoes into 1/8-inch rounds. Set aside.

3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.

4. Gradually whisk in milk. Cook until thickened and smooth.

5. Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

6. Remove from heat. Stir in 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese until melted.

7. Layer half the sliced potatoes in the dish. Pour over half of the cheese sauce.

8. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce. Top with remaining ½ cup shredded cheddar.

9. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake 15–20 minutes until bubbly and golden.

10. Let rest 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley or chives if desired.

Notes

Use freshly shredded cheese for the creamiest texture—it melts better than pre-shredded.
