Description

Southern Cabbage is a cozy, skillet-cooked classic loaded with buttery flavor, tender cabbage leaves, and a hint of heat. Simmered with garlic, onions, and broth, it’s a warm, savory side dish or light main perfect for weeknights or holiday spreads.

Ingredients

1 medium head green cabbage, chopped

1 medium yellow onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup chicken or vegetable broth

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Instructions

1. Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.

2. Add chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.

3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.

4. Add chopped cabbage and stir well to coat with the aromatics.

5. Let the cabbage cook down for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

6. Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth.

7. Season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.

8. Cover the skillet and let simmer for 15–20 minutes, until cabbage is tender.

9. Uncover, add apple cider vinegar, and stir well.

10. Simmer uncovered for 2–3 more minutes to reduce excess liquid.

11. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed before serving.

Notes

Don’t overcook the cabbage—aim for tender, not mushy. It should retain a slight bite.

For extra flavor, sauté bacon or smoked sausage with the onions at the beginning.

If you’re making it ahead, reheat with a splash of broth to restore moisture.
