Description
These buttery apple bars are layered with spiced cinnamon apples and a crumbly topping that tastes just like your favorite fall pie—only easier to make and serve! With a tender crust and sweet-tart apple filling, they’re perfect for parties, potlucks, or an after-dinner treat.
Ingredients
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
½ cup granulated sugar
½ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter (cold and cubed)
1 large egg
4 cups apples (peeled, cored, and thinly sliced – Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
2 tablespoons granulated sugar (for apple filling)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for apple filling)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
2. Peel, core, and thinly slice apples. Toss them in a bowl with 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Set aside.
3. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt.
4. Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or fingers until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
5. Stir in the egg until the dough just comes together.
6. Press two-thirds of the dough mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan.
7. Spread the spiced apples evenly over the base.
8. Crumble the remaining dough over the apple layer.
9. Optional: Mix a bit more cinnamon and brown sugar and sprinkle over the top.
10. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender.
11. Cool completely before slicing into bars.
Notes
For cleaner slices, chill the bars before cutting.
You can use half Granny Smith and half Honeycrisp for a balance of tart and sweet.
Add a sprinkle of chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping for extra crunch.
