Description

This Caramelized Onion Jam is a rich, sweet-savory spread that turns simple ingredients into something unforgettable. Slow-cooked onions, butter, brown sugar, and vinegar come together in an easy recipe that works beautifully for appetizers, snack boards, dinner ideas, and homemade food ideas. It is perfect for toast, burgers, sandwiches, cheese boards, and quick entertaining, making it one of those flavorful kitchen staples you will want to keep on hand.

Ingredients

4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

3 tablespoons brown sugar

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

2 to 4 tablespoons water, as needed

Instructions

1. Peel the onions and slice them thinly into even strips.

2. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until the butter melts.

3. Add the onions and salt, then stir well to coat.

4. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook the onions for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring often, until very soft and golden brown.

5. Stir in the brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, apple cider vinegar, thyme, and black pepper.

6. Continue cooking for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until the mixture is thick, glossy, and jammy.

7. Add a small splash of water if needed during cooking to prevent sticking or scorching.

8. Remove from the heat and let the jam cool slightly.

9. Transfer to a clean jar or airtight container and refrigerate once fully cooled.

Notes

Cook the onions slowly for the best deep caramelized flavor.

Slice the onions evenly so they soften and brown at the same rate.

The jam thickens more as it cools, so do not overcook it until dry.
